The Media Institute of Southern Africa Zambia Chapter has called on politicians, boards of directors of Community Radio station and private media owners to stop harassing Journalist.

Misa Zambia Board Vice Chairperson Hyde Haguta says it is impossible that the media industry and professionalism will flourish in an environment which breeds self restraint and prior censorship.

“we are disappointed that cases of media abuse have continued to happen, our members are still being detained by police for mere misunderstandings over press cards. We feel that police are being overzealous in some case and this must be halted!”

hyde-hagutaMr Haguta says MiSA sees no reason why police can be the one now deciding media house or journalists should cover which events.

“Police are not news editors of journalists, they are police, they have no news judgment to usurp function of the media. There is no newsroom in the police offices apart from PR (Public Relations) wings whose obsession is projecting a fovourable image of an abusive police force”, he says.

Adding, “going forward we want to see a media free of unnecessary interruptions from police and politicians. we want on the other hand to see Government putting in place a media police that should help in the growth of the media industry in the country”.
